Childreen book - Escola Missão Continente 2025

Briefing
“O Lanche Secreto” (PT)| “The Secret Snack” (EN) launched on February 2025 bring themes like food choices, label reading, food habits, family routines and curiosities about nutrition to the little ones in preschool and elementary school.🥦🥬🍎🍌🚥

The Education program is carried out by Continente (the main supermarket chain in Portugal). After “Um torneio inesquecível” (PT)| “An unforgettable tournament” (EN)  in 2024 ⚽️❤️🏐🚲, this is the 4th book released under Escola Missão Continente, and Bavaroise was invited, happily once again, to illustrate the story of the new theme.

The book's reading is a key part of the program and has followed a specific graphic design style made by Bavaroise under the commission of MOSSA since 2021.

Synopsis
"Kiko and his friends are excited about a field trip to a vegetable garden, where they will learn about growing healthy food. But while the class is getting ready for this adventure, three very special characters—Clara Beterraba ( Beetroot), Tomás Ananás (Pineapple), and Hélio Cogumelo (Mushroom) - embark on a secret mission: to ensure that Kiko’s snack will be healthy and nutritious.
With great determination and creativity, the three friends embark on moments full of adventure and humor while they work to help Kiko make healthier food choices. Will our heroes be able to complete this mission successfully?

Packed with fun and valuable lessons, The Secret Snack teaches children about the importance of healthy eating in a captivating and entertaining way.”

Idea
The previous books explored the "vegetable world" in a farm, then the fish life at the ocean and next came sports and school. The third book takes a turn, delving into the life of Kiko, the human character who appeared lightly as a child in the last two books.
So for the 4th book, we get to know its family and their food routines at the same time we introduce 3 characters with strong personalities that will secretly help to managed a well balanced snack for the school trip.

To prepare for each scene, we highlighted the most interesting elements and sketched the characters for client discussion. We collaborated closely with the client, suggesting illustrating the characters always with distinct personalities and color diversity.

The primary challenge was to create a fun and engaging way to teach kids how to read a food product's nutritional label. All illustrations needed to maintain the consistent 'emoji look'—characterized by big eyes, simple shapes, and a vibrant color palette. The client’s vision was key, and together we developed a creative approach to visualize the traffic light system, which categorizes food items as high, medium, or low in fat, saturated fat, sugar, and salt using red, amber, and green.

Another challenging example was how we tackled products not suitable for daily consumption. Using a detective mood board, we illustrated 'Mr. Sugar' on a wanted flyer, surrounded by other 'crime' scene evidence, to emphasize the importance of looking for sugar near the top of the ingredients list.
